JUVÉDERM® XC injectable gel is an FDA approved dermal filler manufactured by Allergan, Inc. Juvederm Ultra Plus is designed to temporarily restores volume to the skin, and smooth away moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds. It is made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a sugar that occurs naturally in the body. In terms of the skin, HA's role is to deliver nutrients and hydration, and act as a cushioning agent. Young, healthy skin contains a lot of HA, but factors that include aging and sun exposure reduce the amount, causing skin to lose structure and volume. JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus is most effective in improving the appearance of nasolabial folds, the lines that run from the bottom of the nose to the corners of the mouth, and marionette lines, which run from the corners of the mouth towards the chin. Juvederm is enjoyed by women and men over the age of 21. Younger people with genetic predisposition may choose Juvederm Ultra Plus to soften the lines, while older people use it to fill the lines formed due to the aging process. Juvederm is favored by many, as it appears very natural and subtle when administered by a trained professional.

What Are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are injectable products that enhance the volume to create fuller lips. At Nouvelle Vie, we prefer to use Hyaluronic Acid fillers. HA fillers have several unique advantages - they are not harmful, the variety of fillers available provide most natural looking results, and may be easily diluted if patient and doctor decide to get rid of the filler. This rarely ever happens, in fact, never happened in our practice, but still good to have the option.

How do lip fillers work?

Your skin naturally produces hyaluronic acid, a sugar-based compound responsible for delivering and maintaining moisture and nutrient levels in skin cells, and which creates the appearance of volume and smoothness in young, supple skin. Unfortunately, with the progression of time, your skin's ability to manufacture its own hyaluronic acid diminishes. HA is a smooth gel that is made of cross-linked hyaluronic acid particles. When injected into the lips, the filler replenishes the hyaluronic acid that has been absorbed into your body over time, and adds more volume, helping you achieve fuller lips. Lip filler treatment entails a series of injections under the lip surface. The amount needed depends on the result you want to achieve. Often, one syringe is enough to see a difference in volume. We don’t recommend injecting 2 syringes in one session. However, if you want to increase the size of your lips more drastically, we recommend to come back within a month or two and repeat the procedure.

How do I know if I need Lip Fillers?

There is no right age to start treatment, depending on your lip form and size, you may choose to increase the volume. The best way to know if filler is right for you is to schedule a consultation with a doctor.

Who can get Lip Fillers?

Adults, men and women, 21 – 65 years of age are candidates for the treatment, considering they don’t have any of the contraindications, which will be discussed with the doctor at the consultation.

How long is the injection treatment?

The average length of filler injections is about 10 to 20, depending on the individual and the amount of filler being injected. However, there is 10 to 15 minutes prep time, where photos will be taken for result comparison, and consent form will be signed. Also, most of the time, patients/doctors prefer to apply a topical anesthetic cream to the injection site, to ease the pain. Although not necessary, since fillers we use contain lidocaine which will begin numbing the area as soon as injections begin. Topical cream is mainly for comforting the patient, and takes 15-30 minutes to take effect.

Will Lip Fillers make me look fake?

Filler injection is a technique-sensitive treatment. You should not lose the ability to show expression when you are treated by someone who is licensed and trained. The variety of fillers we have available today are designed to give you the most natural looking results. It is also important to talk to your doctor about the results you desire so that your expectations can be addressed.

When will I see results?

Most individuals will notice results immediately, although due to minor swelling upon injections, the actual result will be seen after 2 weeks (or when the swelling subdues). If you are not satisfied with the result after 2 weeks, you should schedule an appointment for an evaluation. At that point the doctor can help you decide whether more filler is needed, or recommend additional treatments.

Does it hurt?

Some patients report that being injected with fillers feels like a pinch or minor discomfort. If you are concerned about discomfort, your provider may apply a topical numbing cream before administering your treatment, however, this is not always required since all our HA fillers contain lidocaine, making it more comfortable to endure the treatment.

Is there any downtime after my treatment?

Dermal filler injections require very minimal downtime, allowing patients to return to work and their normal activities directly following treatment. However, when it comes to lip fillers, it is best to avoid touching your lips, kissing, and sucking through a straw for the next 24 hours, to allow the gel to set.

What are the most common adverse effects associated after Lip Filler injections?

After your treatment, you might experience swelling, redness, bruising, and tenderness in the area injected. Bruising may last a few days or more. A topical arnica cream may be suggested, along with cover-up make up. (Bruising depends on many factors, including your lifestyle and medications, as well as doctor’s technique. It is always recommended to avoid any blood thinners, including Aspirin, Vitamin K, and Alcohol. Doctor may recommend taking Arnica prior to injections. At times, there is a chance that a less visible vessel may be in the injected site, and may be hard to avoid.)

How long do Lip Fillers last?

In general, the results from HA injectable fillers are temporary; commonly lasting from few months to two years. This depends on the type fillers used. For optimal results, additional treatment sessions are encouraged. A lip filler lasts 3-6 months after initial injection. For longer lasting results, we recommend not to wait too long between the 2 and 3rd treatment. Ideally, you want to inject 2nd time in 3 months, and 3rd time within 6 months. By layering the filler you are creating longer lasting volume.

How much do lip fillers cost?

Price is determined by the area treated, type of filler(s) needed, and the amount of filler your doctor recommends. Total price will vary per individual case and will be given after a consultation.

What are the alternatives to lip fillers?

There are other types of fillers available which are less natural and more risky to the patient. Therefore, we only recommend HA fillers. We don’t silicone due to its unpredictability and removal must be surgical. We also don’t recommend lip implants for the same reason. HA fillers provide the most natural soft appearance.
